Character history

Carrie writes a weekly column for the fictional newspaper, The New York Star, called "Sex and the City," which focuses on Carrie's trupesc escapades and those of her close friends, as well as musings about the relationships between men and women, dating, and New York. The column provides Carrie with a certain amount of notoriety in New York; she is frequently recognised by people who read the column and is occasionally described as an icon. In the third season, her column is optioned for a film starring a fictionalized Matthew McConaughey. In the fifth season, a collection of her columns are compiled into a book.

She begins to write freelance articles for Vogue at the end of season four. Although she initially has trouble dealing with Enid (Candice Bergen), her abrasive editor at Vogue, she does find her feet and ends up befriending Enid.

She is an on-off smoker, enjoys cocktails, particularly Cosmopolitans—her character's fondness for them helped to popularize the drink—but she is, at heart, an old-fashioned girl and is deeply romantic. She is on an endless search for true love, and refuses to settle for, as she puts it, "anything less than butterflies." Despite this, she repeatedly expresses doubts that she is the type to get married and raise a family.

Carrie is a resident of Manhattan, New York. She lives in a brownstone on the Upper East Side at the fictional address 245 East 73rd Street. She lives in this apartment throughout the series, and buys it in the fourth season. In the initial episodes of the first season, Carrie's apartment is seen to be above a coffee shop somewhere near the vicinity of Madison Avenue (despite its stated address). By approximately the fourth episode the usual facade of a series of brownstones adjacent to hers is adopted, and remains that way throughout the series.

Little is mentioned about Carrie's life before the series, although she has been living in New York for about eighteen years. In the fourth season, around her 35th birthday, Carrie states that her relationship with the city is "about 18 years", implying she moved to New York when she was about 17 years old. It is mentioned that her father left her and her mother when she was five; no siblings are ever mentioned. It is also revealed that Carrie had one abortion in the 1980s, when she was twenty-two years old. Though she had been dating for many years before meeting Mr. Big in the first episode of the series, he is the first true love, the man she thinks may be her soulmate. She tells Charlotte York that she lost her virginity in the 11th grade, though in another episode she claims that she and her high-school boyfriend never had sex.

Wardrobe

Carrie has been described as someone who "lives for fashion", and has confessed to buying Vogue instead of dinner. A known shoe lover with an affinity for expensive designer shoes (notably Manolo Blahniks, but also Christian Louboutin and Jimmy Choo), Carrie claims she has spent over $40,000 on shoes. Her pairs seem to average around $450-500, and it is implied that she has at least, if not more than, 100 unique pairs.

She frequently mixes vintage finds with haute couture. It is mentioned that Barneys, Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Fifth Avenue are among her favorite places to shop. Carrie equates taking a boyfriend to meet her parents with taking a boyfriend to meet the sales assistants at Prada. Her friend Charlotte claims that Carrie dragged her to eight shows at New York's Fashion Week. Carrie once agreed to tip for a charity fashion show (featuring both "real people" and models) on the condition that she could keep the outfit, a Dolce and Gabbana original. Carrie is also known to have worn Chanel, Christian Dior, Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga, Givenchy, Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood, Roberto Cavalli, Helmut Lang, Chloe, Marni, Marc Jacobs, Jean Paul Gaultier, Manolo Blahnik, Sonia Rykiel, Versace, Miu Miu, Fendi, Missoni, Moschino, Betsey Johnson, Oscar de la Renta, Vera Wang, and Gucci, amongst others.

Carrie's incredible wardrobe appears to be entirely unaffordable for a writer on a modest income. Indeed, many of the people around her comment that she cannot afford her shopping addiction. Carrie occasionally maxes out credit cards, could not secure a loan on her own due to poor savings as a result of extensive shopping, and has admitted her "shoe needs" have accounted for most of her spending.

Carrie is particularly known for her addiction (calling it her "substance abuse problem" in one episode) to shoes. Notable moments include an incident when she is mugged near West Broadway and the bandit makes off with her Manolo Blahnik pink suede strappy sandals that she purchased "half off at a sample sale!" and that are her favorite shoes.

Relationships

"Mr. Big"

"Mr. Big" appears in the first episode as a very wealthy and mysterious man who accidentally meets Carrie on the streets of Manhattan. The nickname "Mr. Big" refers to Samantha's description of him as, "the next Donald Trump". Or in reference to his "size". When Carrie and Samantha bump into Mr. Big at a night club, Samantha tries to hit on Mr. Big, but he graciously rejects. In the first few episodes, they constantly bump into one other. Finally, Carrie suggests the two of them should bump into one another on purpose. Mr. Big agrees and thus begins their on-and-off-again relationship.

Carrie eventually falls in love with him, despite his frequent displays of commitment and intimacy phobias. She repeatedly returns to the relationship even though he is clearly emotionally unavailable to her and unable to meet her needs. They break up twice, over the course of two years, for these reasons, before Mr. Big marries a twenty-something socialite, and former Ralph Lauren model, named Natasha (Bridget Moynahan), after only dating her for five months; this is shown to have a profoundly negative effect on Carrie's self-esteem.

Within seven months of his marriage he begins to pine for Carrie and initiates an affair with her. Carrie, herself is in a committed relationship (with Aidan) at the time, feels guilty but continues to see Big. The affair continues until Natasha discovers Carrie fleeing from the marital apartment. Natasha accidentally falls and breaks her tooth while chasing after Carrie and Carrie ends up taking her to the emergency room. As a result, Carrie ends the affair. Carrie later finds out that Mr. Big and Natasha divorce.

Mr. Big and Carrie eventually manage to become friends. He relocates to Napa Valley and they are able to discuss their other on-going relationships with each other. However their sexual chemistry always remains just below the surface and their friendship never remains strictly platonic.

In the series finale, he rescues Carrie in Paris where he tells her she is "the one". Carrie asks Big to take her home back to New York.

His real name, John, is finally revealed on her cell phone caller ID after she returns to the city and he calls to tell her he is closing the sale of his Napa estate and coming back to New York. Executive producer Michael Patrick King has stated that by never revealing his real name, Mr. Big remains "always slightly out of reach" for Carrie, and this plot device is maintained throughout the entire run of the series. Although we see his name in that final shot, Michael Patrick King makes a point (in the DVD commentary) that we never hear it spoken

Aidan Shaw

Aidan Shaw, a Manhattan furniture designer (John Corbett), is her next serious boyfriend after Mr. Big. Their first relationship ends when Carrie confesses, on Charlotte's first wedding day, that she had an affair with Mr. Big. Later in the series, they get back together and become engaged. However, the engagement is broken when Carrie discovers she is not ready to marry him and he is not willing to wait for her. During the sixth season premiere, Carrie runs into Aidan on the street. She discovers that he has married a fellow furniture designer, Cathy, and has a son named Tate (who is played by Sarah Jessica Parker's real-life son). The two agree to meet for coffee; Carrie states in voiceover that "there are some dates you cannot wait to keep, and there are some you both know you will never keep". With Aidan looking on, Carrie walks away, not looking back, and it is implied that they have finally come to terms with the pain they caused each other.

Jack Berger

Following the end of her relationship with Aidan, Carrie begins to date Jack Berger (Ron Livingston), a writer with a mixed degree of success. She meets him while discussing her upcoming book at her publisher's (Amy Sedaris) office. He is a novelist, and feels insecure about Carrie's newfound success as a writer after her book goes international and she begins receiving high-sum royalties. After an initially rocky start (in which Berger must end his relationship with his unseen autentic girlfriend, Lauren) they form a rather playful relationship and one that initially seems to make Carrie very happy. As Carrie's success begins to mount, and particularly after Berger's second novel is not picked up for publication, the relationship deteriorates, culminating in a 'break' between the two. Berger returns, professing his love for Carrie and stating that he wishes to try again, but ends up leaving afterwards, in the middle of the night. Berger breaks up with Carrie on a Post-it note which reads, "I'm sorry, I can't. Don't hate me." After this hasty departure, Berger is referenced in only one more episode—after Carrie runs into his friends at a bar, she regrets leaving Berger an angry message (through his friends), stating that his break-up method was rude and pathetic.

Aleksandr Petrovsky
Carrie meets and begins a relationship with Aleksandr Petrovsky (Mikhail Baryshnikov) in the sixth season. He is a rich, successful and older Russian artist. Carrie enjoys the relationship but problems arise when she discovers he already has a daughter in her twenties and doesn't want to have any more children. Carrie feels forced to choose between a long-term relationship with Petrovsky, and the possibility of having children. She decides to stay in the relationship, despite mounting evidence that he will never be able to fully commit to her emotionally as he is very self-involved, and even at one point claims that Carrie is "not his friend, she is his lover".

He asks Carrie to leave her job and life in New York and move with him to Paris. After some degree of convincing, she accepts but is disappointed and confused upon her arrival. She doesn't speak French and Petrovsky leaves her alone often to tend to his own career. She leaves him and Paris in the series finale, thanking him for everything he had shown her in their relationship, even though it could not work out.

Samantha Catharine Jones

First appearance Sex and the City (episode 1.01)
Portrayed by Kim Cattrall
Episode count 94
Date of birth December 10, 1958
Occupation Public Relations
Family unnamed parents
two siblings
Spouse(s)
James Goodwin (ex-boyfriend)
Maria (ex-girlfriend)
Richard Wright (ex-boyfriend)
Smith Jerrod (boyfriend )

Character History

Samantha is one of four single friends portrayed in the series. Of the four, she is the most sexually liberated, and most of her storylines revolve around the frequent sex she has. She is confident, strong, outspoken, and a self-proclaimed "try-sexual" (meaning she'll try anything once).

Samantha is the oldest of the four friends (in season 6, she reveals she is "forty fucking five"), and owns her own public relations company. Not much is known about Samantha's younger years, except that she came from more of a working class background, and she spent most of her teenage years selling Dilly bars at Dairy Queen to earn pocket money. Season 4 implies that she has at least two siblings, when she mentions that at her age her mother "was saddled with three kids and a drunk husband". She later mentions partying at Studio 54 during its heyday, implying she moved to New York City from wherever she grew up sometime in the mid-1970s. She has mentioned having had at least two abortions, one of which occurred while living in the college dormitories.

In the early part of the series, she lives on the Upper East Side, but ends up moving to an expensive apartment in the Meatpacking District (after one of her late-night visitors lets in a mugger who attacks one of her older female neighbors).

One of Samantha's best qualities is her loyalty to her friends. When Carrie confesses to her that she's having an affair with her married ex-boyfriend (and cheating on her own boyfriend, as well), Samantha tells her that judging is not her style and offers her support. Although she fights with Charlotte a few times, they always manage to get past their differences and make up. Despite having trouble adjusting to Miranda having a child, she willingly gives up a coveted hair appointment and sends Miranda in her place, staying behind to babysit and give her friend a much-needed break.

In the show's last season, Samantha is diagnosed with breast cancer. She faces the challenge head on, playing with her look by wearing outrageous wigs, hats, and headscarves after she loses her hair to chemotherapy. In one of the final episodes, she gives a speech for a cancer benefit and receives a standing ovation for removing her wig onstage and admitting that she was suffering hot flashes. The audience appreciated her candor and honesty, and many of the women in the audience stood up and removed their own wigs.

Relationships
Samantha's main love are men - many of them. Over the course of the series, she sleeps with plenty of interesting characters, including a man who will only "swing" with her if she takes an AIDS test, a seventy-two year old millionaire, a college student with the same name (Sam Jones) from the mid-west eager to lose his virginity, a guy with "funky spunk," and a trainer from her gym who brands her by shaving her hair "down there" into a lightning bolt. She never keeps the men around for long and usually has them out of her apartment by the morning. She once said that she frequently loses underwear because she leaves them at guys' places and never returns. She even slept with her good friend Charlotte's brother, prompting an angry Charlotte to call Samantha's vagina "the hottest spot in town; it's always open."

Samantha rarely dates men more than once or twice. She does have a few "serious" relationships throughout the run of the series:

James

Samantha meets a man named James, (James Goodwin), in a jazz bar at the end of season one. Unusually, for Samantha, she doesn't sleep with him right off the bat, instead taking a leaf from Charlotte's book, because she felt he was a man she could marry. After declaring that she was in love with him, the two finally sleep together, only for Samantha to discover that James was seriously under-endowed, to the point where she could not experience any physical pleasure. Though she tries to work through it, she eventually breaks up with him as they attend a couple counselling session. She confesses she is unable to feel someone as small as a baby carrot, to which he replies angrily by saying, maybe her vagina was too big.

Maria

Samantha flirts with lesbianism and enters into a brief but serious relationship with a woman: an artist named Maria, (Sonia Braga), in season four. The girls find this relationship a complete shock but Charlotte proclaims, "She's not a lesbian, she probably just ran out of men!" Samantha feels she is not a relationship person, and she initially only wants to remain friends with Maria. Maria tells Samantha she cannot continue being just friends with her and Samantha decides to take a chance and kisses her. She seemed intrigued about learning the act of pleasing another woman thus learning more about her own sexuality. Once their sex begins to dwindle and they spend a lot of time talking, Samantha begins to tire of it. Maria also becomes upset when Samantha's sexual past catches up with them. Samantha ultimately ends up missing men too much and, although Maria decides to try strap-on sex, the two break up.

Richard Wright

Later in season four, Samantha meets and falls in love with hotel magnate Richard Wright, (James Remar). Though the two seemed well matched, as they both liked to sleep around and are not interested in relationships, Samantha finds herself becoming increasingly attached to Richard. The two eventually commit themselves to a monogamous relationship. However, Samantha was only to have her heart broken when she catches him cheating on her. After giving Richard a second chance, she decides to end the relationship when she realizes she can't trust him. In the last season, she runs into Richard while out at a party with new boyfriend, Smith, and the two go upstairs to have sex. During intercourse, she is seen as looking disinterested and even not enjoying being with him. Smith waits for her downstairs, knowing what she had done and she breaks down in his arms.

Jerry Jerrod/Smith Jerrod

Samantha meets a twenty-something waiter/actor/model named Jerry Jerrod, (Jason Lewis) while dining at a new, hip restaurant called "Raw" with the girls. She later returns alone to the restaurant, even though the food is horrible, with the sole mission of taking him home and succeeds. Although it seemed, at first, he was to be just another notch on her bedpost, he stuck around. Seeing that he is broke and struggling, Samantha uses her PR skills to jump start Jerry's acting career, and changes his name to Smith. Samantha likes that he is not intimidated by her success (as opposed to Carrie's ex-boyfriend, Jack Berger), and with her influence, he quickly becomes a celebrity. He first gains attention when he models naked in an Perfect vodka ad which later leads to a role in a Gus Van Sant film. Reluctant at first to admit they were dating, Samantha grows to miss him while he is on location shooting his movie. Smith returns from his film and shows true affection which Samantha finds this unsettling. (As she explains to Carrie, he tried to do something purely perverse to her in public, "He tried to hold my hand.") Eventually she begins referring to him as her boyfriend. It appears the two live together, since Smith refers to her place as "home" and he has keys to the apartment. He remained with her through her brush with cancer, even shaving his hair when her hair began falling out and then proceeding to shave hers. Samantha experiences no trupesc drive during chemo and she encourages him to have sex with anyone he wants while he's in Canada filming his next movie. Smith compares her situation to winter; just because the trees are bare doesn't mean they're dead. While he is away, he sends her flowers with the message on the card reading "Looking forward to spring." She calls him to tell him she changed her mind about the sex with other women suggestion and he tells her he hasn't and he won't. Smith returns to New York in the middle of the night, flying back after their phone call to say that he loves her; Samantha replies that he "means more to [her] than any man [she's] ever known", which, for Samantha, is a huge statement. Their last scene together shows the two having sex.

Miranda Hobbes

First appearance Sex and the City (episode 1.01)
Portrayed by Cynthia Nixon
Episode count 94
Date of birth August 23, 1966
Occupation Lawyer
Spouse(s) Steve Brady
Children Brady Hobbes

Character analysis

Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) is a career-minded lawyer with extremely cynical views on relationships and men. A Harvard University law graduate from Philadelphia, she is Carrie's best friend, confidante, and voice of reason. In the early seasons, she is portrayed also as masculine and borderline misandric, but this image softens over the years, particularly after she becomes pregnant by her on again-off again boyfriend, Steve Brady, whom she eventually marries. At one point she admits that she had slept with 42 men. The birth of her son, Brady Hobbes, brings up new issues for her Type A, workaholic personality, but she soon finds a way to balance career, being single and motherhood. Of the four women, she is the first to purchase an apartment, (an indicator of her success), which she gives up when she moves into a Brooklyn townhouse in the final season to make room for her growing family.

Relationships

Skipper Johnston

Skipper Johnston is a twenty seven year old (age revealed in Season One, Episode Four) website designer whom Miranda enters into a tentative relationship with in the first season. Originally introduced through Carrie, Miranda finds Skipper young, immature, and becomes somewhat annoyed with his romantic view of life and love, which contrasts sharply with her cynical outlook on life. Although she occasionally engages in an on-off intim relationship with Skipper, she never truly wishes to be with him. In contrast, Skipper is terribly smitten with Miranda from the start, even going so far as to break up with a girl in mid-intercourse after Miranda calls, as he believes it means that "the woman he loves most" wants to be with him. Skipper eventually disappears from the show in later seasons with little explanation.

Dr. Robert Leeds

Dr. Robert Leeds is a successful sports medicine doctor for the New York Knicks whom Miranda meets while interviewing him with fellow members of her building's tenant board to occupy a vacant apartment. Upon his arrival, Miranda is instantly charmed with Robert and somewhat hijacks the interview to learn more about him. Robert eventually is approved to move in and in time the two begin a short but lively romantic relationship, despite Miranda's longings for her on-off boyfriend Steve Brady. Eventually, at her son's first birthday party, Miranda professes her love to Steve and her and Robert's relationship is ended off-screen. After a few awkward encounters, Robert overcame his anger towards Miranda and Steve and was last seen in the series with two scantily dressed women in his apartment.

Steve Brady

Steve Brady and Miranda meet when she is waiting for Carrie at the bar Steve works during the second season. Although Miranda simply sees Steve as a one-night-stand after they meet, Steve senses a strong connection and asks to see her again. Miranda refuses at first, but they become a couple after she realizes her strong attraction for Steve. The couple's difference in economic status creates a tension in their relationship, and they eventually break up. However they remain on friendly terms, often leading to a sexual relationship between the two. After Steve loses one of his testicles due to cancer, Miranda sympathizes with him and ends up sleeping with him so that he could feel like a "man", so to speak. This results in her pregnancy, to which Miranda initially decides to have an abortion and thus, Steve will never know she was pregnant. At the clinic, she changes her mind and decides to keep the baby. Miranda tells Steve she is pregnant and will take on full responsibility, including raising the child and all finances but Steve can "visit" whenever he wants. Steve later proposes to Miranda, which prompts her to yell at him that she doesn't want to marry him, to which Steve responds that he doesn't really want to marry her. Miranda gives birth to Brady Hobbes (an homage to their respective surnames), and the two try to raise him together as platonic partners. Miranda eventually realizes that she loves Steve, who is seeing another woman, Debbie, as she attempts to admit her feelings for him. Eventually, at Brady's first birthday party, Miranda ends up blurting out her love for Steve and, to her delight and surprise, Steve admits that he too loves Miranda and that she is "the one". They kiss, and it is stated that within three weeks they are back together; they remain together for the rest of the series, eventually getting married and purchasing a townhome in Brooklyn for their growing family.

Charlotte York

First appearance Sex and the City (episode 1.01)
Portrayed by Kristin Davis
Episode count 94
Date of birth July 14, 1967
Occupation Art Dealer
Family Wesley York (Brother)
Spouse(s)
Trey MacDougal (ex-husband)
Harry Goldenblatt (husband)
Children unnamed daughter (adopted child)
Relatives Bunny MacDougal (ex-mother-in-law)
Religion Episcopalian, later converts to Judaism

Character Information

Charlotte York is an art dealer and Smith College graduate (Where she was a young Republican and member of Kappa Kappa Gamma.) with a wealthy Connecticut blue-blooded upbringing. She is the most conservative and traditional of the group, placing more emphasis on emotional love than lust, and is always searching for her "knight in shining armor." Presenting a more straightforward attitude about relationships, usually based upon "the rules" of love and dating, she often scoffs at the lewder, more libertine antics that the show presents (primarily by means of Samantha Jones). Despite her conservative outlook, she has been known to make concessions (while married) that surprise even her sexually freer girlfriends (such as her level of dirty talk, oral sex in public and "tuchus-lingus"). It has been hinted at throughout the series, particularlly the first and second, that she is the newest close friend of the group, for example being unaware of Miranda's long term relationship two years prior to the start date of the series. She gives up her career shortly after her first marriage to Trey MacDougal, divorces him upon irreconcilable differences concerning in-vitro fertilization, and receives a Park Avenue apartment in the divorce settlement. She eventually remarries her less-than-perfect, but good-hearted divorce lawyer, Harry Goldenblatt, after converting to Judaism. In the series finale, Charlotte and Harry adopt her dream baby girl from China.

Background & Personality

Charlotte is viewed by some to be the most naïve of the four characters, often shows signs of belief in the old-fashioned, "love conquers all" notion. This type of outlook has even earned her the nickname "Park Avenue Pollyanna", coined by Carrie Bradshaw in narrations. Charlotte also possesses a soft personality towards her friends, always "being there" for them. It is revealed throughout the series that Charlotte enjoys various degrees of status in her younger life, such as being prom queen, a varsity cheerleader, and teen model. She is occasionally described as a WASP, an identity she seems to happily accept.

Relationships

Trey MacDougal

Trey MacDougal is a doctor from an upper-crust family, with an overbearing, frequently-present mother whom comes to rival with Charlotte. The two meet when she accidentantly falls into the street right in front of the taxi in which he is riding. Trey steps outside of the taxi to help her out, and it is implied that they fall in "love at first sight". Charlotte feels that Trey is the grozav boyfriend and husband-candidate. After months of dating, Charlotte becomes anxious of his proposal. Frustrated with waiting, Charlotte suggests (while at a restaurant) that they should get married, to which Trey casually responds "All righty." Charlotte is furious at this response because it was not what she had imagined. Later, Trey makes up for it by stopping in front of a Tiffany & Co. store during a walk and suggesting that they look for "the most beautiful [engagement] ring they have." They decide not to have sex until they are married, but on the day before their wedding, Charlotte gets drunk and visits Trey's apartment to have sex. This is the first time Trey is shown as unable to perform, implying that he may be impotent. Charlotte addresses her concern to Carrie before she walks the aisle, but is comforted by Carrie, and so the marriage between Trey and Charlotte takes place. As a married couple, the two struggle with the lack of sexual activity and their different opinions about having children (as well as arguments centering around his mother, Bunny). This ultimately leads to their divorce.

Harry Goldenblatt

Harry Goldenblatt is Charlotte's divorce lawyer. Although Charlotte is initially repulsed by Harry's constant sweating and somewhat odd appearance and behavior, she ends up sleeping with him when Harry confesses his attraction to her. She tries to keep their relationship strictly about sex, but soon after her feelings get attached as well. Charlotte converts to Judaism to appease Harry's requirement that he can only marry a fellow Jew, but soon ends up ruining the relationship in a fit of anger. After several weeks of bad blind dates, Charlotte bumps into Harry at the local synagogue singles night, and admits her wrongs, professing her deep love for him. Harry is touched and proposes to Charlotte on the spot. Harry and Charlotte marry in a traditional Jewish ceremony. They explore their options of having children, at one point becoming pregnant (followed shortly by Charlotte having a miscarriage which emotionally devastates her) and finally are approved to adopt a girl from China in the series finale.
